Sir George Grey was Governor of South Australia 1841-1845, New Zealand 1845-1853, Cape Colony 1853-59. He was recalled to England 1859 for encouraging, without special permission, a policy of South African federation, but was later restored to office and was again Govenor of New Zealand 1861-1867. Samuel Marsden (1764-1838), pioneer clergyman, farmer and sheepbreeder, first reached Australia in 1794. He served as a chaplain in New South Wales from 1794, based at Parramatta.
